Anyone who considers themselves to be a knowledgeable vaper has some familiarity with temperature control, and the way in which it can impact flavor. Still, those who are newer to the vaping scene may not realize what they are missing by ignoring the temperature control function of many of today’s most popular devices. Temperature control is an entirely new output adjustment system that offers, in short, more control over many aspects of one’s vaping experience, and perhaps the most notable impact is on flavor, which is what so many of us value above all else when we vape.
What is Temperature Control?
Temperature control is a function of most modern vaping devices, acting as an alternative to wattage-based vaping which is the default output function on almost any mod. Temperature control is easily selected from the display menu, and from there, the user can adjust the temperature, usually in precise increments, as long as they are using a coil type compatible with this vaping method, which is either nickel, titanium or stainless steel.
The temperature at which you set your device ensures that the coil within your tank or cartridge heats up to the exact same temperature whenever you fire it. What this does is keep your vaping session far more consistent, as each hit is almost definitely going to be the same as the last. Also, it allows for more control over the quality of your vapes, as it allows you to make more precise and intricate adjustments to your overall output.
Not all vaping devices have a temperature control option, and so the only way to experience this style of vaping is to select a device that does. Whether or not a device uses temperature control is easy to determine as it will be stated in the manufacturer’s description. Note that temperature control is often abbreviated to “TC,” so if you see this term in the name of the mod, you know that it has this capability.
One final thing to note is that TC vaping is considered to be more advanced than wattage-based vaping. This is because it requires a more intricate style of output adjustment that can have a big impact on your vaping experience, and so you must have basic understanding of the effects of different temperatures. Additionally, it requires more care when selecting a coil, as resistance levels and coil materials must be perfectly compatible with the temperature at which your mod is set.
The Impact of Temperature Control on Flavor
Like we said, temperature control has a major impact on flavor. This is because different flavor notes in your e-liquid are activated at different temperatures. Basically, some temperatures can bring out the richness of a flavor, while others can bring out the freshness of a particular flavor note, such as a fruit. Some temperatures allow for a more complex flavor experience, and some meld the flavor notes together more so that the overall impact is more subtle.
Temperature control offers a specific range of exact temperatures that we can work our way through until we find our flavor sweet spot. Each range of temperatures offers specific impacts on flavor that are worth exploring while you search for that perfect flavor experience.
390 to 420 Degrees
390 to 420 degrees is the most preferred range for vaping. That’s because it can provide a generous amount of vapor that’s never too warm and is smooth enough to not be harsh on the inhale. Meanwhile, it delivers a complex flavor profile that is never too overwhelming to the taste buds, with most e-liquids presenting their full nuance to the palate.
420 to 450 Degrees
Vaping at 420 to 450 degrees will yield slightly warmer vapor and provide even thicker clouds. The vapor won’t be as smooth, but it’s still not likely to result in a lot of harshness compared to higher temperature settings. Meanwhile, it will make your e-liquid taste richer and bolder, and you may lose some of the fresher notes and a bit of the complexity, but the general flavor impact will be more pronounced.
450 to 490 Degrees
Vaping at 450 to 490 degrees gives you extremely thick and large clouds, although at this temperature the clouds may be a bit harsh for those who are particularly sensitive. The vapor will also be very warm, and in fact it can be too warm for some. The flavor will be extremely powerful but keep in mind that some e-liquids may develop a burnt taste at this temperature range, because the flavoring ingredients were not developed to handle exposure to this level of heat. This is where you will need some trial and error to figure out which vape juices really come alive, and which ones simply can’t withstand such high temps.
