Ohm’s Law: A Brief Guide for Vapers

In recent years, the whole vaping experience got a makeover. Vapers are upgrading and buying new mods for their device. With all “upgrading the vaping experience” has brought in brand new terminologies in the game.

Now, vaping devices come with variable settings, where vapers can easily adjust the coil’s resistance, battery voltage, and current. One can get somewhat confused with all the electronic processes. This is where Ohm’s law takes part! Without wasting much time, let’s dive into – Ohm’s Law: A Brief Guide for Vapers.

What is Ohm’s Law?
Ohm’s law states that a conductor accommodates the current flow (or your vaping device in this case), which is directly proportional to a potential difference (voltage of your battery) and inversely proportional to the resistance (of your vaping coil) across the conductor (vape device). The law was named after the German physicist Georg Ohm, who addressed the key components at work in a circuit in 1827.

Today, we use Ohm’s law to calculate the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance in a circuit.

The formula   →  V = I x R

V – the voltage across the conductor, I – the current flowing through it, and R – the resistance measured in ohms (Ω). The unit of measure for voltage is Volt (V), and for current is Ampere or amps (A).

Ohm’s Law for Vapers
Understanding Ohm’s law will give you an edge to know how a vape works. Ohm’s law is commonly represented in the form of a triangle where you can see three main components V, I, and R. The triangle gives an easy formula if you try to say it loud as “V over I times R.”

The Math
Ohm’s law can be used easily to determine the third quantity if we have the other two. For now, we know the main three components and their relationship with each other. You can use the triangle and formulas to help you build coils for your best sub-ohm tank or mods according to your desire.

●     Calculating Current
If you want to determine the current drawn through your coil (resistance), the formula is –

I = V  R or I = V/R

Look at the triangle; you will understand that you have to divide V by R to determine I.

●     Calculating Power
If you want to determine the power generated at the coil. The formula is simple, although it is not part of the triangle. The formula is

P = V x I

From the above example, we can calculate the power of your device.

P = 4.2 V x 8.4 A

P = 35.3 W

We can also conclude that high resistance can deplete your device’s power and voltage n your device from this simple math.

●     Calculating Resistance
If you want to determine the resistance of your coil without exceeding the CBR of the battery, you can use formula –

R = V  I

For example – let us assume that your battery has a 4.2 V max voltage. The CDR of the battery is 10 A, so just to be safe, we will assume 9 A. So the math –

R = 4.2 V  9 A

R = 0.47 Ω

The conclusion is that the safest lower limit with 10 A battery is 0.47 A. Anything lower than that will risk the limit of CDR of a battery. Of course, the resistance drops further with higher Ampere batteries.

Using Ohm’s Law for Mods

●     Mechanical Mods
Mechanical mods don’t come with regular safety and protections built-in, unlike regulated devices. So, knowing Ohm’s law becomes crucial in such instances. As a result, they won’t read the resistance of your coil, so you have to test it on an ohm reader. Once you know your coil’s resistance, you can figure out the rest of the math using Ohm’s triangle or formulas.

●     VV/VW Mods
VV/VW mods are completely different from your regular mods. They are vaping devices that have internal circuits, regulating power output through controlling voltage or wattage. So, to calculate Ohm’s law for VV/VW mods, you have to modify the above equation of power:

P = V x I to I = PV

Let’s take an example – A freshly charged battery has 4.2 V of voltage. But to be on the safe side, you should count the minimum voltage for the battery. Furthermore, regulated mods use boosts of voltage to give out optimum power. Let’s assume that you are vaping at 3.7 V of voltage at 75 W, the current you are drawing in your device is –

I = 75 W  3.7 V

I = 20.3 A

You can get a gist on how a single battery draws out 75 W of power. Similarly, you can derive different voltages at different battery powers.

Significance of Ohm’s Law for Vapers

In the end, you might have got an idea of how Ohm’s law works for you. Let’s take a look at essential points:

When you use lower resistance coils, more electricity flows through it.
Results – More heat and vapour generates. The flavour intensifies, and the vapour will be warm. On the other side, battery and e-juice will deplete quickly. Battery and coil life will also reduce. And, when you use a higher resistance coil, less electricity will flow through it. The results you can imagine are the exact opposite of the above.

Conclusion
To sum up, Ohm’s law states that by adjusting the resistance of coil and battery voltage, you can revamp your vape device’s current and power. Understanding Ohm’s law can give you small freedom on how you want to modify your vaping experience. The law also will help you know the limitations of your device, keeping you safe. Maybe now you can also make your mod according to your likings.
